HISTORY
There was a time not all that long ago when everyone was hyped up on LSD and all that other crazy weird drugs and stuff like that. Well, as strange as it is to say, that’s exactly where our story is going to start. It was the summer of 1969 when Johnny Carterson and Carla O’Neil first met at Woodstock, during the Joe Cocker concert to be precise. It was supposed “love at first sight” but it was probably the fact that they were both rather high, but either way they kept meeting up and really before the end of the Woodstock festival there was a bun in the oven, they just didn’t know it yet. Johnny took Carla home to meet his parents and they sort of agreed but when Carla took Johnny home to her parents they nearly ran after him with a shot gun for corrupting their daughter, needless to say after they were married and their first child, Andrew, born they didn’t go see her parents. Also in the summer of 1969 another child was born, a young girl to be named Martha was born. She was the product of a six year marriage and was the third child of five. Her parents were rather strict when it came to discipline and right from wrong. Martha grew up in a well structured home with both sides of grandparents watching out for her best interests. Until her junior year of high school that was all she really truly wanted for herself.
In 1986, Martha and Andrew’s junior year of high school, things were going very good for both teens. They were the exact opposite of each other but that didn’t mean they were enemies, they just couldn’t stand each other. Unfortunately this dislike got to such a point that they were both given detention together and were forced to work together on a project, just their luck. Well needless to say Andrew and Martha found they had something in common, their likes in music and their beliefs in the world. After their rendezvous in detention they started hanging out with each other and finally, after a year or so of dating Andrew proposed to Martha who quickly agreed, much to the dismay of her parents and family. The couple was married on June 21, 1988 and set off trying to start a family. About a year later Martha and Andrew welcomed their first child to the world on October 12, 1989. Being the true hippies that they sort of were, they decided on naming him Understanding Phoenix Arizona Sunrise Carterson, try saying that ten times fast.
Phoenix was the first born child in his family and was the “big man on campus” in his house for about two years. The doctors were very impressed with young Phoenix as he should’ve died during birth, or at least have had permanent brain damage. When he was born his umbilical was wrapped around his neck and the doctors didn’t catch it in time to unwrap the baby before he made his way out of the womb. His first big breath of air was cut short when it tightened around his neck cutting him of the freedom he greatly desired. Lucky for him, a miracle for the doctors, he was perfectly fine after the cord was unwrapped from his small neck. After their scare with Phoenix the couple was careful as to what they did around him, holding him, talking to him, anything. Although the doctors reassured them that their baby was fine, the couple acted as if he was a fragile piece of glass that would break if you so much as breathed on it. Eventually though they did get better about being parents and finally were able to let him grow up like a normal child, regardless of how abnormal his name was.
As Phoenix grew older Martha and Andrew decided they wanted him to have siblings to play with and with that when Phoenix was just two years old his first sibling, a sister named Peaceful Autumn Ryvre was born to the family. The Carterson’s didn’t stop there though they continued producing children until they had eight tiny tots running around. With the addition of all these children the Carterson family knew they’d have to move to a bigger house as soon as possible, unfortunately for them California wasn’t big on big houses, well ones they could afford, and with that Andrew and Martha packed up their family of ten and moved to Arizona where they bought a large plot of land and built a house that would house them all. As Phoenix and his siblings grew older they started adding things onto the house, like play equipment and areas for them to just be alone, which Martha and Andrew used as well. It came as a surprise to the Carterson children when there were no more additions to the family, but they decided it was just dumb luck.
When Phoenix entered high school the family moved again, not because of space, oh no it was because of a broken heart. The summer before his freshman year Andrew suffered a heart attack, the doctors said it was probably because of his drug use as a young man. Either way, his heart stopped beating and he was pronounced dead two days after he was rushed to the hospital. Devastated by her loss Martha moved her children to Clearwater Florida to escape the memory, and to find a new place for her to write her books. Phoenix took this as a time to “reinvent” himself and make a new name for him. Changing his name to just Nix he started going out for sports, one was football, and he was really good, although he didn’t make varsity the first or second year of high school, he did make it when he was a junior. His mom was so proud of him and even wrote a character in one of her books based off him. After a couple years of living in Florida Phoenix asked his first girl out on a date. He was so relieved when she said yes and they ended up dating for the last two years of high school.
Throughout high school Phoenix was in the top of his class. He always paid close attention to everything the teachers said and that’s one of the reasons why he found it so easy to get away with a lot of things. He quickly learned that if you were smart and nice to the teacher they had a hard time believing anything bad about you, even if you really did do it. That being said he rarely pulled a prank and when he did it was nothing that caused permanent damage. In the end he graduated with honors and is now entering the local college as a freshman.
